Project GET is a great mentor program designed to help ELL (english language learners) students, foreign students, and students at risk of failing to help them get more involved in the school and their community. They have fun events throughout the year such as conversation cafes, which happen monthly, and focus on a different culture each time as they eat the cuisine from that individual student’s country. They also have other events such as field trips to colleges and they plan events such as the cultural fashion show during fiestaval.

This program is run by Lisa Edmisten, Marcelina Zamora, and Matthew Long. And as of now, is a program unique to Woodcreek, we are the first school to provide it for students and are being used as an example to spread it to other schools.

This program really seems to help people become more confident and outgoing. Alondra Sanchez, an ELL student, says that she was really shy before the program and that she would have been too shy to even be able to do the interview with us if she had not joined the program.

Kali Epps, a mentor, also says that they teach the mentees to “ break out of their shells and teach them that we [the high school] are all a unit.”

Overall this seems like a great program that is great if you want to learn about new cultures, make new friends, and have fun!
